Purpose: The purpose of this assignment is to learn why all hospitality managers should understand employment laws.  Skills: As a result of completing this assignment, you will practice written communication and responding to peer’s in a professional manner.  Knowledge: Students will gain knowledge employment laws, discrimination, EEO legislation, and legal issues in a social context.

Task: In order to complete this assignment you will execute the following. 1. Answer the following question: Why should managers be concerned with understanding HR law instead of leaving it to the experts? (15 points)  Answer should be 400-500 words.  Post your original comment to the discussion questions with students (your last name) in the subject line (my post would say: Ch 3 Sammons).  Prepare a response to at least 2 peers to the question above of a minimum of 250-300 words. You are automatically assigned 5 peers.  Provide at least one reference other than the textbook to support your answers to the discussion question! Be sure to put the reference information in your posting using APA formatting. o Cite the source after the information is presented. (author, year) o At the end of your discussion, please cite your source. The minimum information that must be included in the citation is the following:  If printed or electronic journal article: Title of Article, Title of Journal, Date and Issue number (if available).  If web site: Title of article or company and website address.  Post your original answers to the questions by Wednesday at 10:00 pm. 2. Read criteria for posting discussion file. 3. After Wednesday at 10:00 pm read each of your peer’s postings. Response postings may not be posted before 6 am on Thursday. 4. Respond to at least 2 of the peers regarding their discussion why managers should know HR Law addressing the following question: What additional concerns can you add to their list? ( 8 Points) o Prepare a response of a minimum of 100-150 words to at least two peers.

Criteria for Success: A successful assignment will have the following characteristics:  A critical evaluation of the importance of knowledge about human resource laws.  You cite one additional reference to support your response to the discussion questions.  The textbook is not an additional reference.  Sources will be cited the end of your discussion using APA format.  Students do not begin reading the answers until after Wednesday at 10 pm – so you have the opportunity to read all postings.  Response postings may not be posted before 6 am on Thursday.  Notes to posting on the discussion board: o You may use a word processor to complete the discussion before posting in Learn.
