  • Font 12 point Times New Roman (or similar font)
  • All sides should have 1-inch margins
  • 5 line spacing
  • Maximum 2 pages;

Statement of purpose requirements is a formality that shows the school you can follow academic writing principles and present yourself professionally. Let’s get to the point.

How to Craft an Impactful Statement of Purpose: The Beginning

Before you begin crafting your paper, it’s essential to envision your ideal portrayal. Consider what career in a particular field you would like and then explain why that school was chosen for you; this information is vital when speaking with admissions officers. For instance, instead of saying “I want to become an artist”, write something like “I would adore working as a senior graphic designer for a company that emphasizes environmental sustainability” or “I wish the firm to improve our ecological situation”. Make each sentence vivid and detailed so readers get more details about what interests you!

Once you have collected your thoughts and written them down, you can begin crafting your statement of purpose. This should include key principles that need to be applied in the school setting.

  1. Introduction, 1st Paragraph: Introduce yourself and state your goal.
  2. Body 2nd Paragraph: What inspired you to pursue this path?
  3. Body, 3rd & 4th paragraphs: Demonstrate why you are an ideal candidate for this program.
  4. Conclusion, closing sentence: What objectives do you have in this field?

Your statement of purpose (SOP), as you can see, follows the 5 paragraph essay format.

Here is an example of a strong opening paragraph for a statement of purpose:

Statement of Purpose:I am considering applying to the University of Southern California’s MBA program in Cartoon Animation for spring 2020. My interest has been spurred on by both my own screenwriting career and my daughter’s fascination with comics and cartoons, which Chapman University awarded me my BFA degree in 2010. After graduation, I immediately started working as a cartoon screenwriter; being a father also inspired me to help my teenage daughter pursue filmmaking as well.

What Should I Include in My Purpose Statement?

Your purpose statement should contain the first paragraph

The first paragraph should outline who you are, your background information and your career objectives. Be specific when applying to the program – discussing marine biology wouldn’t make much sense if applying to Engineering programs! It is essential that all information provided to the admissions board relates back to what the program has to offer somehow.

For Example, If you’re applying to the Painting and Printmaking program at San Diego State University’s School of Art and Design, make sure to highlight your drawing experience as well as design skills. No one can teach you drawing fundamentals; therefore, demonstrate to the admissions committee that you already possess them. Also add what draws you to painting/drawing – is it self-expression or do you want others to see your artwork? Whatever it may be, your statement of purpose will be stronger if it comes from the heart.

Your statement of purpose’s second paragraph

The second paragraph should provide insight into how your passion evolved. After setting the scene with your first paragraph, provide evidence to illustrate how and why this interest has grown over time.

It’s not enough to simply say, “I love teaching,” be specific and dig deeper. Have you ever solved a math problem for someone in need or helped your schoolmates with their assignments and felt satisfied that they gained something from it? These details will make you stand out as an individual who enjoys helping others; otherwise, your content may come across as dull or unoriginal.

Your field experiences should be highlighted in the third and fourth paragraphs.

Start by summarizing your overall experience. Afterwards, elaborate on specific details about any internships, volunteer work or other interesting projects related to the program for which you are applying. Although these might be hard to envision at first glance, there are always ways to enhance them.

For Example: When applying to become a teacher, your past experience as a cashier at a grocery store is irrelevant. What matters is how well you teach and train new cashiers – this will make you an excellent teacher with impressive learning outcomes.

Your experiences should align with the school’s programs.  The chances of acceptance into the program will be enhanced if your credentials meet all necessary requirements. Your statement of purpose should demonstrate why you deserve to be considered for admission into the program.

You may include any extra information in the fourth paragraph that was not covered previously. Keep it brief and list your accomplishments accordingly – this is another chance for you to show why you are the perfect fit for your position. A statement of purpose should not exceed one page in length.

Paragraph 5: Your Conclusion

In your conclusion paragraph, it’s essential to discuss your goals. Be specific and specific; don’t just say “I want to become a registered nurse.” Instead, say something like “My dream job is working at an ICU at a local hospital as the first responder for people facing critical situations.” Demonstrating that you can work under pressure while maintaining calm yet attentive attention to detail should be part of this goal; make it so obvious admissions board members can see you performing CPR in scrubs!

You have already shared your accomplishments and life lessons. Now it is time to show the world your clear vision of where you want to go after graduation.

Questions the Admissions Committee Expects You to Answer

Let’s now examine how to craft an impactful statement of purpose. These inquiries won’t be directly asked by the admissions committee, but they do expect this information to be included in your statement. These answers can be provided through storytelling that showcases your personality, goals and commitment to the program.

  • Which academic direction did you select and why?
  • What made you select this college?
  • Why did you opt for this country when applying to school?
  • How long have you been working in your chosen field?
  • What skills will be acquired through this degree program?
  • What are your post-graduation plans? Will you be searching for a job or continuing your studies?
  • What expectations have you had for this school?
  • Are there any particular professors whose lectures you look forward to hearing from? If so, please explain why.
  • Finally, how can we make our school better together?
  • What are your hobbies, interests and habits? Who are you as a person?
  • How do you think this school’s student population will view you?
  • What values does the school hold that makes it unique from other applicants?
  • Tell me something that sets you apart from other applicants!

Answering these questions will enable you to convince the committee that you are worthy of consideration.

Writing Strategies for Statements of Purpose

Standing out from the crowd when crafting a purpose statement can be daunting. Many purpose statements sound similar, making them easy to get lost among similar ones. To stand out, challenge yourself to create something unique by turning your statement into an intriguing story. Here are some strategies to help you craft an original statement.

Strategy 1 on How to Craft  Impactful Statement of Purpose: Avoid Copying Templates

Statements of Purpose for students often follow a similar format, making them unremarkable. Your statement will then be reviewed by an admissions officer before being sent off to be recycled in the nearest recycling bin.

A bad statement example: No negative statement can be said about my excitement to pursue Master of Science at the University of Vermont. Ever since childhood, science has been an interest of mine – I recall sitting in class daydreaming about becoming an engineer/scientist someday.

These opening statements lack life and excitement. Even if the writer claims to be passionate about science, their statements do not convey their true feelings towards it. A story can convey the same message in a unique and engaging manner.

Strategy 2 on How To Craft an Impactful Statement of Purpose: Story is King

Your story should be the anchor that draws readers in and makes them care. Use vivid language and vivid imagery to elicit empathy from readers, and don’t be afraid to add adjectives and other small details that help readers get to know who you are. However, keep in mind that a statement of purpose shouldn’t just be an outline; it should include key components from a narrative as well.

Let me tell you a short and dull tale.

An example of a good statement: Working at an office made me consider starting my own business. Ever since I was little girl, it has been my ambition to give back to the world through creativity. After working one day, it dawned on me that perhaps school wasn’t the best fit for me and started searching for schools where I could pursue becoming an amazing entrepreneur.

It’s a dull story, as the facts and context are lacking. What type of office was that? What are the connections between creativity, wanting to make an impact in the world and searching for business school? There is no narrative here – nothing to draw readers in. Despite claims by the writer that they’re tired of their job, their narrative fails to capture readers’ attention; language used doesn’t convey vivid or descriptive detail.

Here is a better one:

Example of a good Statement: In my past life, I worked in an office. Typing away all day and dealing with unhappy customers to ensure their issues were resolved promptly was tiring work for someone else. One morning when taking a walk around my lovely city, however, I realized I wanted to create my own business. I also didn’t want anyone else running it for me anymore. As such, I ran back home to search for business schools.

What makes the difference?

The second example is more descriptive. “I used to work in an office,” while being short and direct, does not adequately capture the boredom associated with such a job. Ironically, the next sentence describes exactly that job and twists the phrase “your issue will get addressed quickly” that customer service representatives usually use.  Use of words like”drained” or “jogged” throughout to paint an accurate picture which creates a special connection with readers who can “feel for” you and empathize.

The second story follows a three-act structure common to plays, movies and literature: conflict, setup and resolution. The protagonist is an ordinary office Joe who becomes dissatisfied with his job (conflict), but finds inspiration (or redemption) by returning to his passion of being an entrepreneur (resolution).

Strategy 3: Being specific when discussing your accomplishments

Admissions committee members value applicants who demonstrate confidence and boldness in their accomplishments. Be specific with dates, awards titles, and quotes so the admissions committee understands what you’re talking about even if they don’t provide specifics. If you are too broad you may come across as boastful. If you provide the specifics the admissions committee will still recognize what you are discussing.

Example: George Orwell, author of 1984–one of many political books I studied for my honours thesis on political psychology–remarked, “Perhaps one didn’t want to love so much as understand.”

Let me briefly introduce my interests in digital marketing and my aspirations. I will provide a summary of my senior thesis, which earned me the Vermont University Chancellor’s Award of Excellence in Marketing 2007.

Strategy 4: Avoid Duplicating the One Crafted Statement of Purpose to Address Multiple Schools

Many applicants make the mistake of copying and pasting their statements into multiple schools at once, which will greatly reduce their chances of acceptance. Each school looks for unique qualities in applicants, so sending one generic statement won’t cut it any slack. While you don’t need to write seven statements of purpose, personalizing each one for each school will greatly boost your chances of getting an admission. While the base can remain unchanged, tailoring it specifically for each institution will dramatically boost their likelihood of acceptance rates.

Harvard: Growing up in Zanzibar before moving to Middlesex (England), I experienced a multicultural environment from an early age. Harvard emphasizes respect for others’ rights, dignity and differences – which I believe to be an outcome of my upbringing.

Stanford: My multicultural upbringing has fostered an inquisitive spirit that drives me to discover the world through natural curiosity. Additionally, my working-class background has made me a hard worker who always closes deals. Stanford’s mission statement of “advancing our mission as research university to serve as a place of knowledge and freedom of expression” resonates deeply with me.

Strategy 5: Use a formal tone but keep it conversational When Crafting a Statement of Purpose

Write his document with an informal approach. The admissions committee wants to know your personal and professional goals. Always remember they understand that you want to impress them, so try your best not to overcomplicate things. They don’t care if you use complex synonyms or overly technical language. What they want most instead they want to gain insight into who you are as an individual and your interests.

Bad: My goal is to find a career in digital marketing, an increasingly competitive field.

Positive: My ambition is to secure employment within this field.

Success will come naturally to you if you remain true to yourself and open about your objectives.
